Turn a Discourse forum or online community into an app

Communities live on habit. An app icon brings members back more reliably than a bookmark — and Discourse is already a polished mobile web app.

Short answer

Use /latest (or your main category) as the start URL, keep the forum domain and any SSO domain inside the app, and open external links outside. Image uploads in posts need file-chooser support. Discourse's own web push won't reach the app, so either rely on email or add native push.

Discourse is a single-page app — good news

Discourse runs as a JavaScript app with its own routing, so navigation inside the WebView is fast and smooth. Make sure your Android back button behaviour feels right: back should step through topics, then exit.

Logins

Local accounts work. Social logins (Google, Facebook, GitHub) open in pop-ups or redirects that fail or are blocked in WebViews — keep local login or email links available in the app, and hide social buttons there with an app-mode theme component.

Notifications

Discourse's notifications use web push, which WebViews don't support. Options: rely on email digests, or build the app with native push and connect it to Discourse via a webhook or a push service plugin. See push for URL apps.

Moderation and Play

User-generated content apps on Google Play must have ways to report and block users and content, and clear community rules. Discourse has these built in — mention them in your Play listing and content rating questionnaire.

FAQ

Does Discourse have an official app?

DiscourseHub exists for multiple communities; your own URL app shows only your forum with your branding.
