Turn a Moodle site or course platform into a branded app

Students check the course site daily. A branded app with your school's name and icon makes that one tap — if assignments can still be uploaded.

Short answer

Use the login or dashboard URL (Moodle: /my/) as the start URL, keep your LMS domain and your single sign-on domain inside the app, and confirm assignment uploads, PDF downloads and video playback work. If your SSO uses Google or Microsoft accounts, test it carefully: Google blocks WebView sign-in, so a Custom Tab flow or a local password option is needed.

Moodle already has an app — why build one?

The official Moodle app is excellent but generic: students search for your site, and the branded version is a paid service. A URL app gives you your name and icon immediately and shows exactly your theme, plugins and pages. It's also right for course platforms without an app of their own.

Single sign-on

  • Moodle accounts / LDAP: work as normal.
  • Microsoft (Entra ID) SSO: usually works in WebViews, but some tenants enforce device policies — test with a real student account.
  • Google Workspace SSO: blocked in WebViews. Use a Custom Tab flow — see Google sign-in.

Assignments and files

Students upload photos of handwritten work, PDFs and documents. The app must support the file chooser and camera — see uploads in URL apps. Course files behind a login need cookie-aware downloads, or students get an HTML login page instead of a PDF.

Distribution

For one school, share the APK through your website or MDM; for wider use, publish on Google Play under your institution's developer account with an accurate Data Safety form (student data!).

FAQ

Can I make my own Moodle app for free?

A URL app of your Moodle site is free to build with Website to App.

Will quizzes work in the app?

Yes, Moodle quizzes run in the WebView like in mobile Chrome. Timed quizzes need a stable connection.
